Microsoft
Microsoft Corporation : is an international technology company with its main office in Redmond, Washington. The Windows line of operating systems, the Microsoft 365 family of office tools, and the Internet Explorer and Edge web browsers are some of Microsoft's most well-known software offerings. The Xbox video gaming consoles and the Microsoft Surface range of touchscreen personal PCs are its two main hardware offerings. Microsoft was the top software manufacturer in the world by revenue as of 2022, according to the Fortune 500 list of the largest American firms by total revenue. Along with Alphabet (the parent firm of Google), Amazon, Apple, and Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook, Inc.), it is regarded as one of the Big Five American technological giants.
On April 4, 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen established Microsoft in order to create and market BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. In the middle of the 1980s, MS-DOS and then Windows propelled it to the top of the market for personal computer operating systems. Three billionaires were made as a result of Microsoft's 1986 initial public offering (IPO) and subsequent increase in share price, along with an estimated 12,000 millionaires among its staff. Since the 1990s, it has diversified from the operating system industry and acquired a number of businesses, the largest of which was LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in December 2016[3] and was followed by Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion in May 2011.
Although it has lost the majority of the total operating system market to Android, Microsoft continues to hold a commanding position in the markets for operating systems compatible with IBM PCs and office software suites as of 2015.[5] In addition, the company creates a wide range of additional consumer and business software for desktops, laptops, tabs, gadgets, and servers, including Internet search (with Bing), the digital services market (through MSN), mixed reality (HoloLens), cloud computing (Azure), and software development (Visual Studio).
In 2000, Steve Ballmer took over as CEO in place of Bill Gates, and he later developed a "devices and services" approach.[6] With the purchase of Danger Inc. by Microsoft in 2008,[7] the launch of the Microsoft Surface tablet computer line in June 2012, and the formation of Microsoft Mobile through the purchase of Nokia's devices and services division, these events came to pass. The company has trimmed back on hardware and instead focused on cloud computing since Satya Nadella took over as CEO in 2014, a move that helped the company's shares achieve their highest value since December 1999.
In 2018, Microsoft recaptured its title as the most valuable publicly traded business in the world after having been dethroned by Apple in 2010.[10] After Apple and Amazon, Microsoft became the third American publicly traded firm to have a market cap of $1 trillion or more in April 2019. Microsoft will have the fourth-highest worldwide brand valuation as of 2022.
Microsoft has been under fire for its monopolistic business methods, as well as for issues with its software's usability, reliability, and security.
